## About this wine

Bodegas Mas Alta was founded in 1999 by Belgian partners Michel and Christine Vanhoutte, who were captivated by the unique terroir of Priorat. Located in the high-altitude village of La Vilella Alta, the estate benefits from the region's iconic 'llicorella' slate soils. Els Pics serves as the estate's introduction to the Priorat DOQ, blending traditional varieties with international grapes. The wine represents a harmonious balance between the intense minerality of the slate soils and the vibrant, sun-drenched fruit of the region.

## Interesting facts

- The winery was established with the guidance of renowned French winemaker Michel Rolland.
- The name 'Els Pics' refers to the rugged mountain peaks that surround the steep vineyards of Priorat.
- The vines are planted in 'llicorella,' a unique dark slate soil that forces vine roots deep into the earth for water.

## Food pairing

The structured tannins, high alcohol, and vibrant acidity of this Priorat blend require rich, flavorful dishes. High-protein meats like lamb and beef help soften the wine's tannins, while the earthy undertones of the wine pair beautifully with mushrooms and roasted root vegetables.

## Wine making process

The grapes for Els Pics are hand-harvested from both young and old vines planted on steep slate terraces. Upon arrival at the gravity-fed winery, the fruit undergoes rigorous sorting. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel vats to preserve fresh fruit characteristics. The wine is then aged for approximately 10 to 12 months, with a portion resting in French oak barrels (both new and used) and the remainder in concrete tanks to maintain purity of fruit and terroir expression.
