## About this wine

The Mullineux Granite Syrah 2021 is a single-terroir wine from the Swartland region of South Africa, specifically from the Paardeberg area. It is crafted from 100% Syrah grapes grown on decomposed granitic soils, a characteristic that defines its name and contributes to its unique profile. Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, founded in 2007 by Chris and Andrea Mullineux, is dedicated to expressing the Swartland's terroir through sustainable farming and a hands-off winemaking approach. The 2021 vintage was notably cool, leading to a balanced and aromatic expression of Syrah.

## Interesting facts

- Grapes grown on decomposed granite.
- Deep-rooted vines access scarce water.
- Minimalist winemaking with indigenous yeasts.
- Vegan-friendly, bottled unfined and unfiltered.

## Food pairing

The wine's medium+ body and fine-grained tannins are well-suited to complement the protein and fat in richer meats, preventing the palate from feeling overwhelmed. Its inherent minerality and potential savory notes can echo earthy flavors in dishes, while its natural acidity helps to cut through richness.

## Wine making process

The Mullineux Granite Syrah 2021 is produced using 100% whole-cluster fermentation, with grapes being foot-trodden in open-top French oak barrels. Fermentation is driven by indigenous yeasts, and gentle extraction is achieved through hand punch-downs, with skin contact lasting 28 days. The wine undergoes extended aging: 11 months in 500L French oak barrels (50% new), followed by 10 months in a 2000L foudre. It is then aged for an additional eight months in bottle before release. The producer employs sustainable and reasoned farming practices.
