## About this wine

First created in 1960 by legendary Chief Winemaker Max Schubert, Penfolds Bin 389 is affectionately known as 'Baby Grange' because components of the wine are matured in the exact same American oak barrels that held the previous vintage of Penfolds Grange. Combining the structural elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon with the plush richness of Shiraz, Bin 389 established Penfolds' global reputation and remains one of Australia's most respected and highly collected red wines.

## Interesting facts

- Nicknamed 'Baby Grange' as it matures in barrels previously used for Penfolds Grange.
- First crafted in 1960 by legendary winemaker Max Schubert to showcase multi-regional blending.
- Combines Cabernet Sauvignon structure with the plush richness of Shiraz.

## Food pairing

The high tannins, full body, and vibrant acidity of Bin 389 demand rich red meats or aged cheeses. Protein and fat soften the firm tannic structure while matching the wine's intensity and rich fruit concentration.

## Wine making process

The 2024 Bin 389 is a multi-regional blend sourcing fruit from Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Padthaway. Following primary fermentation, the wine was aged for 13 months in American oak hogsheads, 34% of which were new. This oak regime integrates the firm tannin structure with concentrated dark fruit and sweet spice nuances.
