## About this wine

Quinta de Sant'Ana is a historic family-run estate located in Mafra, just north of Lisbon. Originally purchased in 1969 by German Baron Gustav von Furstenberg, it is now managed by his daughter Ann and her husband James Frost. Working alongside renowned oenologist Antonio Moita Macanita, the estate focuses on organic viticulture. The unique microclimate here is heavily influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, bringing cool morning mists and salty breezes that allow for a slow, balanced ripening of the grapes, resulting in wines of remarkable freshness and elegance.

## Interesting facts

- This wine is highly exclusive, with only 3,120 bottles produced for the 2020 vintage.
- While Touriga Nacional is typically jammy and heavy, the Atlantic breezes here make this one of Portugal's freshest expressions.
- The estate's red grapes are planted on steep, shallow calcareous clay slopes to maximize sun exposure.

## Food pairing

This robust, high-alcohol red wine requires rich, savory dishes with plenty of protein and fat to bind with its structured tannins. The high natural acidity of the wine cuts through the richness of slow-cooked meats and game, while its intense herbal and floral aromatics beautifully complement roasted herbs and earthy, aged cheeses.

## Wine making process

The grapes are 100% hand-picked into small 20kg boxes, de-stemmed, and gently crushed. Fermentation and maceration take place over the course of one month in truncated conical oak vats (balseiros), utilizing gentle pump-overs and extended post-fermentation maceration. The wine is then transferred to used French oak casks where it ages with occasional light battonage. The 2020 vintage was bottled in August 2023 after approximately 30 to 33 months of total maturation.
