## About this wine

The Mullineux Schist Syrah 2019 is a 100% Syrah from the Swartland region of South Africa, specifically from the Roundstone Estate. This single-vineyard wine is cultivated on soils rich in schistose rock, a key factor in its unique identity. Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, established in 2007, is known for its terroir-expressive wines, with a focus on sustainable farming and a minimalist approach to winemaking. The 2019 vintage was characterized by drought conditions, leading to concentrated fruit and balanced acidity.

## Interesting facts

- Grapes grown on schist soils, known for water retention and deep root systems.
- Whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts.
- Aged in French oak and a large Foudre for complex integration.
- Minimal intervention winemaking philosophy.

## Food pairing

The wine's full body and structured tannins are well-suited to complement the richness of proteins like lamb, beef, and game. Savory and herbal notes in the wine can echo or contrast with herbs and spices in the dishes, while the wine's natural acidity can cut through richer sauces and fats.

## Wine making process

The Mullineux Schist Syrah 2019 is produced using 100% whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Extraction is managed through gentle foot-stomping and hand punch-downs. The wine is aged for 12 months in 500-liter French oak barrels (50% new), followed by 10 months in a 2000-liter Foudre. A further 9 months of bottle aging precedes release. Sustainable farming practices are integral to the vineyard management.
